Orthodontic Assistant Training: Dental Laboratory Technician Jobs In California - The Career Profile

by James Kendrith

A typical dental exam should be scheduled every six months. Your dentist will thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, mouth and throat. These visits can include a head and neck exam, a clinical dental examination, and a typical dental cleaning. Sometimes, a brief orthodontic examination may be performed by the dentist as well.

1. The head and neck examination typically takes dental exams a step further than traditional checkups. The dentist will likely examine your facial structure, palpitation of chewing muscles, and palpitation of lymph nodes. Furthermore, the dentist will sometimes perform a cancer screening and examine your Temporomandibular joint to make sure that everything is in line.

2. A clinical dental examination, sometimes included in the six month checkup, includes screenings for gingivitis and periodontal pockets. Tooth mobility, mucus membranes, saliva, and occlusion (bite) are almost always examined in the clinical dental platform. Your dentist will look for tooth decay, broken fillings, erosion, and the ever dreaded "contact between teeth," additionally.

Initially, when they arrive, the orthodontist reviews their development and documents it in the form of a chart or graph in a file. Dental marketing assistants come and study these files. Some of them take X-Rays; others tighten wires and replace rubber bands. Some others change brackets and remove excess cement deposited on teeth. Some dental marketing assistants are responsible for preparing the molds for retainers and removing the patient's braces. When the dental assistants have performed the required procedure, they again visit the orthodontist. He/she rates the work done by the dentist, remarks on the improvement and schedules the next appointment. In this way, a large number of patients can be treated efficiently and quickly. The array of dental marketing assistants doing various jobs can be compared to a colony of worker ants, all doing different things to do a main job.

The average salary range for a dental technician is $35,545 to $55,856 per year. The highest salaries were reported by experienced technicians who operate private practices. The self employed technician may earn over $60,000 per year. In California the outlook for this career is great at the moment. Cosmetic dentistry is growing at an unprecedented rate. Along with that growth the demand for qualified dental technicians is growing as well. If you're starting your career in California, you can expect a higher starting salary, and wider range of choice in companies to work for.
