Orthodontist Assistants:Explaining the Annual Salary of Dentists

by David Thompson

Dentists continue their education long after leaving dental school. Individuals in the dental industry frequently are given the opportunity for seminars, programs and classes as part of continuing education efforts. Seminars and programs provide opportunities for dental professionals to learn about the latest innovations and technology from others in the field.By professionals continuing their education, patients get the best treatment with trained personnel and the professionals learn how to be as efficient as possible, as well as learning tricks of the trade.

Some of the surgical procedures performed by a dentist include corrective surgeries on gums while also supporting bones in order to better treat various gum diseases. Dentists routinely extract teeth from their patients in order to make a model according to it and also to take measurements so that adequate dentures can be placed in place of the removed tooth. Dentists often perform procedures that involve administering anesthetics and later writing prescriptions for their patients involving antibiotics and other similar medications. The equipment that a dentist uses in his or her clinic, for routine checkups and surgical procedures, involve mouth mirrors, brushes, probes, scalpels, forceps, drills, and x-ray machines. A dentist often requires technologies like digital scanners, lasers etc along with these instruments. Dentists have to wear gloves, masks, and safety glasses like surgeons during procedures in order to protect themselves from patients who might have infectious diseases.

For dentists, Kansas has the most stringent requirements, calling for 60 credit hours of training every two years. For dental hygienists, Arkansas has the most training requirements, calling for 40 credit hours of continuing education every two years. Most states do not require continuing education credit hours for dental assistants are California, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee and Texas. The U.S. province of Puerto Rico also requires continuing education for dental assistants. California and Minnesota require the most training for dental assistants. Both states require 25 credit hours every two years.

Of course, dentists in metropolitan areas have the means to earn higher than dentists in small communities due to the vast population, employment rates, and not to mention the inclination of cityfolk to have their teeth cleaned, whitened, and/or corrected. However, dental competition in populous cities is very tough, and most dentists resort in a montage of publicity stunts just to get a better flow of customers. Dentists even offer free cosmetic services to famous actors and actresses to get recognized. And apart from the services they provide, dentists are also known purveyors of dental whitening products, which can substantially increase their median income, basing on the keen interest of patients for at-home teeth whitening products.

Mostly dentists work independently with their own private clinics. They work on 5 days a week schedule and it is up to them on whether they want to work on weekends or not and how many vacations they wish Orthodontist Assistantsto take. This liberty and flexibility at work is what is most favored by private practice dentists. Those who are new in setting up have to put in more work hours to get recognized whereas the ones in most demand are able to enjoy their schedules the most.
